Diagnosing the Problem

The Pressure Gauge is Key

The first and most important step is to check your boiler’s pressure gauge. As one of our engineers, Jay from Boiler Solutions, demonstrated in a recent call-out, the pressure gauge provides an instant diagnosis.

In the video, the black arrow on the gauge was pointing to just 0.25 bar. This is far too low for the boiler to operate. Your boiler’s internal safety systems will shut it down to prevent damage, leaving you without heat and hot water.

A Quick Look Inside Your Worcester Highflow 440

The Worcester Highflow 440 is a floor-standing combi boiler. Understanding a couple of its key components can be helpful:

  • Main Heat Exchanger: Housed behind the silver casing, this is a durable cast-iron component that heats the water for your radiators.
  • Plate-to-Plate Heat Exchanger: Located on the left, this component is responsible for providing you with instant hot water when you turn on a tap.

Key features of the Worcester Highflow 440 include:

  • Floor-standing design: Ideal for properties without the space for a wall-mounted boiler.
  • High hot water flow rate: Can comfortably supply hot water to multiple taps at once.
  • High-efficiency condensing technology: Helps to reduce gas consumption.
  • User-friendly controls: Simple knobs and a clear display make it easy to operate.

How to Repressurise Your Boiler: A Step-by-Step Guide

To get your boiler running again, you need to increase the water pressure. The ideal pressure for most residential boilers when cold is between 1 and 1.5 bar. We recommend aiming for 1.5 bar.

You can do this using the filling loop, which is typically a flexible, silver-braided hose located underneath the boiler.

  1. Locate the Filling Loop: Find the filling loop connected to the pipework under your boiler. It will have a small tap or lever on it.
  2. Slowly Open the Valve: Gently turn the lever on the filling loop. You should hear the sound of water entering the system.
  3. Monitor the Pressure Gauge: Keep a close watch on the pressure gauge. You will see the arrow begin to rise as the system fills with water.
  4. Close the Valve at 1.5 Bar: Once the gauge reaches 1.5 bar, firmly close the lever on the filling loop. It is crucial to ensure it is fully closed to prevent the system from becoming over-pressurised.
  5. Test Your Boiler: After repressurising, test your heating and hot water to confirm that the boiler is now working correctly.

For more detailed information specific to your model, it’s always a good idea to consult the manufacturer’s user manual. You can typically find these on the official Worcester Bosch website.

When to Call a Professional

While repressurising your boiler is often a quick fix, if you find yourself having to do it regularly, it could be a sign of a more serious problem, such as a leak in the system.

You should call a Gas Safe registered engineer if:

  • You are not comfortable carrying out the repressurisation process yourself.
  • The water pressure drops again soon after you’ve topped it up.
  • You can see any signs of a leak from the boiler or around your heating system.
  • Your boiler is displaying a fault code that you don’t understand
